We got HACKED on Discord. Beware indie devs.

We have some bad news, last week we got hacked by someone impersonating an indie dev. They said they were part of STUDIO LYCEROS, working on a game called HALTARONE. They showed me a trailer (which was hosted on youtube but now removed) and asked me to test the game with a sobby story.

Sadly, this is something I have often done in the past, participating in game jams and interacting with indie devs, so I accepted, downloaded and RAN the insecure code. This was very, very dumb.

Sadly, this WAS A HACK and it allowed them to take over DISCORD / my whole PC, sending me screenshots of my open personal accounts and asking for ransom, a truly harrowing experience.
Luckily all of my important accounts have some form of 2FA so everything is safe. Nothing that backups and formatting can’t solve. However, our NBB.exe discord server got cleared out. It still exists, but everyone has been expelled. Of course everyone looking to re-join is more than welcome!

Keep in mind things like these are more and more common, and harder and harder to spot, so if you ever come across something similar, remember now many scammers have access to AI tools to make very presentable marketing material for fake games.
If you will run UNSAFE files, make sure you know the source well, and/or RUN IN A SEPARATE WINDOWS SANDBOX.

True Sadness.
